Sultan Bahoo | Sultan-ul-Arifeen | Sarwari Qadri | Sufi Saints2020-06-16T15:17:06+05:00

Sultan-ul-Arifeen Sultan Bahoo is the beloved friend of Allah. He is the leader of Mystics and the Fakir stationed at the highest spiritual level of ‘the master of worlds’. Moreover, he is the perfect spiritual guide possessing the absolute light of guidance. He declares:

  • I am the perfect and accomplished spiritual guide possessing the absolute light of guidance. I am the Fakir who holds the rank of ‘the master of worlds’. (Nur-ul-Huda Kalan)

The master of worlds Fakir (Fakir Malik-ul-Mulki) is the highest and ultimate rank of Fakirs. While, the perfect spiritual guide possessing the absolute light of guidance is the most superior among those who execute the duty of guiding seekers of Allah on the Divine path of Faqr and adorn the throne of Divine guidance and persuasion. Hence, these are the most elevated levels of the Universal Divine Man (al-Insan al-Kamil).

Sultan-ul-Arifeen Sultan Bahoo was born on Thursday, 1st Jumada ath-thani 1039 H (17th January, 1630 AD) in Shorkot, District Jhung, Pakistan (then India). It was the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.  Sultan Bahoo belonged to the Awan tribe whose genealogy traces back to Ali ibn Abi Talib. Awans are the progeny of Ali ibn Abi Talib from wives other than Fatimah bint Mohammad.

Sultan Bahoo’s father was Bazayd Mohammad. He often mentions his name while introducing himself in the beginning of his books as, “A book by Fakir Bahoo, who is the son of Bazayd Mohammad and belongs to the Awan tribe.” Bazayd Mohammad was a soldier by profession and held distinguished position in Shah Jahan’s army. He was a virtuous man, followed sharia perfectly and had memorized the Quran by heart. He spent his youth in jihad. Afterwards, Bazayd quietly left the royal court and married his relative, Bibi Rasti. She was a Saint and was famous in the family for her piety. Therefore she spent most of her time in prayers and invocation (dhikr / zikr). Sultan Bahoo remembers his mother in all his books with great love. He says in his book Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan;

  • My mother’s eyes bled while invocation. I also experienced this state. It is called the Divine presence.

Allah revealed upon her the grandeur and spiritual status of Sultan Bahoo before his birth. Hence, she named him Bahoo (one with Hoo ھو –the Divine Essence) according to his status of annihilation in Hoo (Fana-fi-Hoo). He says;

Meaning: Bahoo’s mother named him Bahoo because he has always remained with Hoo

Shrines of Sultan Bahoo’s parents are in Shorkot. They are famous by the name of Mazar Mai Bap Sultan Bahoo (Shrines of Sultan Bahoo’s father and mother).

Since birth, the Divine light (Noor/Nur) had been radiating from the sacred forehead of Sultan Bahoo and his eyes glittered with the refulgence of Divinity. This light showed its miracles from very early age. His mother remained engrossed in prayers and invocation as she was sure that the blessed baby would not disturb her. In infancy, Sultan Bahoo did not take feed during the days of Ramadan just like Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. This was a miracle by infant Bahoo. His personality was so attractive and effective since childhood that on whomsoever his eyes were cast, his life changed totally. Surprisingly, a non-Muslim would immediately accept Islam if his eyes fell upon the luminous face of Sultan Bahoo. Such was the intensity of Divine theophanies radiating from him.

Undoubtedly, Sultan Bahoo was a Saint by birth. Hence, he remained engrossed in heavenly experiences and revelations from his early age.

Sultan Bahoo gained his early mystic education from his mother. However, he could not avail the opportunity to receive formal academic education. As, he was ever absorbed in the deep ocean of Divine Unity. He says:

  • Like the Holy Prophet, I also did not get formal academic education. We had the esoteric knowledge. As a result of Divine experiences such inspirational knowledge revealed upon me inwardly and outwardly that a number of books are required to express it. (Ain-ul-Faqr)

He further says:

Explanation: Although, I did not get any worldly education but the esoteric knowledge has completely sanctified me.

Sultan Bahoo states in his books, “I searched for spiritual guide for thirty years but in vain”. It was mainly because he already held such elevated levels of Faqr where access of anyone is extremely arduous. Though, Sultan Bahoo relates a revelation in his books about his oath of allegiance to the Holy Prophet. One day, engrossed in Allah’s vision, he was wandering in suburbs of Shorkot. All of sudden, Ali ibn Abi Talib came and took him to Mohammadan Assembly. In the assembly, People of Cloak, Rashidun Caliphs and Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani were also present. There, Sultan Bahoo took oath of allegiance at sacred hands of Prophet Mohammad. Then the Prophet entrusted him to Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani for further spiritual guidance. That is why Sultan Bahoo always refers Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani as his spiritual guide in his books.

He says, “When Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani blessed me, I surpassed all spiritual levels from eternal beginning till eternal end.”

He writes about his experience of presence in Mohammadan Assembly, “I saw and experienced everything spiritually as well as physically.”

In Risala Roohi Sharif, he says:

دست بیعت کرد مارا مصطفٰیؐ

خواندہ است فرزند مارا مجتبٰیؐ

شد اجازت باھوؒ را از مصطفٰیؐ

خلق را تلقین بکن بہر خدا

Explanation: I have taken oath of allegiance at sacred hands of Prophet Mohammad and he has called me his spiritual son. He has allowed and ordered me to persuade and guide people on path to Allah.

Afterwards, Sultan Bahoo’s mother persuaded him that he must take physical oath of allegiance (bayat) to a spiritual guide. Another tradition follows that after Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani completed the spiritual training of Sultan Bahoo, he ordered him to take oath of allegiance upon the hand of Abdul Rehman Jilani Dehlvi who lived in Delhi. Thereafter, Sultan Bahoo set for Delhi in obedience to the given order. He met Shaikh Abdul Rehman Jilani on 29th Dhul al-Qadah, 1078 (11th May, 1668 AD). The Shaikh took him in privacy and granted him the eternal Divine treasure he had been searching since years. Hence, Sultan Bahoo received his eternal destiny in the form of Ism-e-Allah Zaat in a moment in single step during his only meeting with his spiritual guide.

After taking physical oath of allegiance, Sultan Bahoo returned from Delhi and started executing duty of guiding people towards righteousness. From that day onwards, the Divine radiance and theophanies manifested from his existence intensely. So much so, hundreds of people elevated to the level of Divine union just by his single glance. Sultan Bahoo travelled all his life to educate and guide people on the path of Faqr. Mostly, he distributed the treasure of Divine love and knowledge among common people. He mentions about his spiritual powers in these words;

Explanation: For every true seeker of Allah I hereby render my guidance. I can take him straightaway from the initial stage of the spiritual journey to the final and supreme level instantly. Come to me O seeker of Allah! No doubt! I can take you to Allah on the very first day. (Risala Roohi Sharif)

Sultan Bahoo re-organized the Qadri order of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani by the title of Sarwari Qadri order. He promoted this order particularly in the Sub-continent and provided complete knowledge about this mystic way through his books.  The Qadri order infact reaches Prophet Mohammad through Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. There are two offshoots of Qadri order; Zahidi Qadri and Sarwari Qadri. However, Sultan Bahoo declares only the Sarwari Qadri order the proper and real Qadri order. He describes the marvels of Sarwari Qadri order in these words:

  • The Qadri way is dominant over time and space. There are two off-shoots of Qadri way, the Zahidi Qadri and Sarwari Qadri. Basically, what is the difference between the two? Sarwari Qadri is the mystic way which the Holy Prophet conferred upon me……Consequently, every seeker whom I guided thereafter, physically or spiritually, through the medium of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad, got presence of Mohammadan Assembly without any struggle or invocation. Then, there remained no veil between Allah and that seeker and he observed Ism-e-Allah Zaat wherever he looked. In short, Sarwari Qadri way is very beneficent and courageous. In other mystic ways, some seekers burnt to death by the blaze of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. While, some could not bear the burden of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and retreated whereas some apostatized and were cursed. (Ain-ul-Faqr)

Sultan Bahoo was a Sunni Muslim and followed Imam Abu Hanifa’s school of thought. He says:

  • I follow Imam Abu Hanifa who was a Mystic with pure inward. He ever remained free of polytheism, infidelity and heresy of music. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Kalan)

Title of Sultan Bahoo is Sultan-ul-Arifeen meaning ‘the king of Mystics’. The Holy Prophet also bestowed upon him the titles of Mustafa Sani and Mujtaba Aakhir Zamani. Sultan Bahoo proclaims in his most popular book Risala Roohi Sharif:

Meaning: Since the eternal benevolence has graced me with grandeur, Prophet Mohammad has ordered me to guide everyone. Whether Muslim or non-Muslim, fortunate or unfortunate, dead or alive. Furthermore, he has titled me Mustafa Sani and Mujtaba Aakhir Zamani with his pearl divulging tongue. (Risala Roohi Sharif).

Both titles Mustafa and Mujtaba mean ‘the chosen and desired one’ and are specific for the Holy Prophet. However, he himself blessed Sultan Bahoo with these titles. Mustafa Sani means ‘Mustafa the second’ while Mujtaba Aakhir Zamani means ‘Mujtaba of the last era’.

Sultan Bahoo holds the status of fifth Sultan-ul-Faqr. In his treatise Risala Roohi Sharif he explains the grandeur and attributes of the seven Sultan-ul-Faqr souls in these words:

“Know! When light of AHAD (The One) coming out of His isolated Oneness, intended to manifest Himself, He graced all the worlds with the splendid sight of His pure Divine Beauty. Both the realms started burning like a moth on the candle of His blazing beauty. Hence, the light of AHAD concealed in the veil of ‘M’ of AHMAD (sall’ Allahu alayhi wa’allihi wasallam). Then, the Essence shook Himself seven times due to the abundance of Divine passionate will. Subsequently, seven purest souls of Fakirs, annihilated and immortal with Allah appeared on the eternal tree of pure transparent belief. It happened seventy thousand years before the birth of Adam.

These souls were absorbed in the Divine vision, all essence without body, submerged in the unfathomed ocean of Divine beauty. From pre-existence till eternal end, they neither saw nor heard anything except the Divine Essence. Thereafter, they ever remained in the Divine sanctuary as an everlasting ocean of absolute unity with Allah.  At times, they endeavored in glorification and purgation with their celestial body. While, sometimes they are a drop in the ocean and sometimes an ocean in a drop.”

“The beneficence of اِذَا تَمَّ الْفَقْرُ فَھُوَاللّٰہُ meaning: ‘When Faqr is accomplished that is Allah’ has covered them. Thus, they have got an eternal life. Furthermore, the crown of اَلْفَقْرُ لَا یُحْتَاجُ اِلٰی رَبِّہٖ وَلَا اِلٰی غَیْرِہٖ has honoured them. It means, ‘Faqr demands nothing from Allah or from anyone other than Allah’. They are neither aware of the birth of Adam nor about the occurrence of doomsday. They have their steps on the heads of all Saints, al-Ghawth and al-Qutb. In short, it is right to call them Allah and also justified if you call them men of Allah. One who knows their reality, finds this secret.

The sanctuary of Magnificence is their station. They never asked for anything from Allah except Allah Himself.  Moreover, they never paid heed towards the petty world, houris and castles of heaven or luxuries of hereafter. The single theophany of Divine Essence left Prophet Moses perplexed and Mount Sinai burnt into ashes.  However, same theophanies of Divine passion descend upon them seventy thousand times every moment in blink of an eye. Yet, neither they object nor lament. Rather, they demand for more, saying ھَلْ مِنْ مَّزِیْد meaning: ‘Is there any more!’ They are the Sultan-ul-Faqr and lords of all the worlds.” (RISALA ROOHI SHARIF)

Afterwards, Sultan Bahoo reveals the names of these seven purest souls:

“One of them is the soul of queen of doomsday Fatimah bint Mohammad (may Allah be pleased with her). Second is the soul of Hasan of Basra (may Allah be pleased with him). Third is the soul of our spiritual guide Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (may Allah be pleased with him). He is the Divine reality, absolute light and the perfect manifestation of Truth. Fourth is the soul of Sultan of Divine light, secret of eternal Essence, Pir Abdul Razzaq (may Allah bless him). He is the son of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. Fifth is the soul of Fakir Bahoo who is annihilated in Hoo (the Divine Essence). He is the fountain head of sight of the Unknowable and secret of the secrets of the Divine Essence.

Furthermore, two among them are the souls of other Saints. The stability of both the worlds owes to their favour. Unless these two souls manifest in the world of diversity coming out of abode of Oneness, doomsday will not occur. Their sight is absolute light of Oneness and the alchemy of honour. On whosoever the reflection of their hidden reality casts, his being transforms into absolute light. They do not need to engage their disciples in the struggle of superficial daily recitals and mystic exercises”. (RISALA ROOHI SHARIF)

Though, Sultan Bahoo could not read or write, even then he has authored 140 books. Whatever he stated verbally as a result of Divine revelations, his spiritual successors wrote it there and then. All his books are in Persian except the collection of his poetry which is in the form of Punjabi quatrains.

  • Spiritual Guides of Sarwari Qadri Order (It includes biographies of all Shaikhs of Sarwari Qadri order from Sultan Bahoo till date)

Sultan Bahoo has not used the conventional terms of Sufism or Mysticism for his teachings, rather he calls them Faqr. In essence, Faqr is the spiritual way which leads to the Divine knowledge and vision of Allah. In all his books, he particularly lays emphasis on acquiring Faqr under the guidance of spiritual guide of Sarwari Qadri order. Moreover, he declares the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat the key to sanctity of innerself and purgation of soul. Subsequently, the purged soul attains vision of Allah and presence in the Mohammadan Assembly, the most elevated spiritual stations. In order to achieve them he strictly persuades the seekers to renounce love of world and paradise. Furthermore, he teaches to abstain from the desires of innerself and seek only Allah with pure intention. Also, the seeker must get rid of spiritual diseases like arrogance, malice, conceit, backbiting, miserliness, hypocrisy, pretense etc.

For all these purposes, Sultan Bahoo declares the guidance of true Sarwari Qadri spiritual guide inevitable. He also clearly mentions the signs of true spiritual guide and fake guides so that the seekers are not deceived.

Sultan Bahoo had many junior spiritual successors (Khalifa Asghar). However, he could not find any capable seeker to whom he could transfer the Divine Trust. Hence, he did not appoint anyone as his superior spiritual successor (Khalifa Akber) during his life. He says;

Explanation: Whoever came to me wanted to fulfill his worldly desires. No one deserved to be my spiritual confidant whom I could transfer the Trust of Faqr.

Explanation: I could not find any true seeker of Truth whom I could elevate to Divine presence, granting him Divine secrets. (Ameer-ul-Kaunain)

Hence, he left this world without transferring the Trust. Eighty four years after death of Sultan Bahoo, Sayyid Abdullah Shah Madni Jilani was born in Madina in 1186 Hijri. He was eternally chosen to be entrusted the treasure of Faqr. Thus, he came from Madina to India at order of Holy Prophet and under guidance of Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. It was the year 1241 Hijri (1825 AD). Thereupon, Sultan Bahoo finally transferred him the Divine Trust of Faqr from his shrine. Then Sarwari Qadri order continued from Sayyid Abdullah Shah Madni Jilani.

Sultan Bahoo had four wives:

  1. His first wife belonged to the family of Makhdoom Burhanuddin Ahmad, resident of Langar Makhdoom, district Jhang, Pakistan.
  2. Second wife was also from Awan tribe
  3. Third wife was his close relative.
  4. Fourth wife belonged to a rich Hindu family. She accepted Islam at the hand of Sultan Bahoo before he married her.

Sultan Bahoo had eight sons. Their names are:

  1. Sultan Noor Mohammad
  2. Sultan Wali Mohammad
  3. Sultan Latif Mohammad
  4. Sultan Saleh Mohammad
  5. Sultan Ishaq Mohammad
  6. Sultan Fateh Mohammad
  7. Sultan Sharif Mohammad
  8. Sultan Hayat Mohammad

Doctor Sultan Altaf Ali writes in Mirat-e-Sultani (Bahoo Nama Kamil) that he also had a daughter. Her name was Mai Rehmat Khatoon.

Sultan Bahoo’s family continued only from his three sons; Sultan Noor Mohammad, Sultan Wali Mohammad and Sultan Latif Mohammad. While, other sons died childless. One of his sons, Sultan Hayat Mohammad died in childhood.

Sultan Bahoo died at age of sixty three years on Thursday, 1st Jumada ath-thani, 1102 Hijri (1st March 1691 AD).

Shrine of Sultan Bahoo is in Garh Maharaja, tehsil Ahmadpur Sial, district Jhang, Pakistan. This shrine is free from all kind of heretical practices. Here, hundreds of Mystics remain in seclusion for the sake of vision of Allah. Once entered in the shrine, one does not want to come out of it. Especially, the seekers of Divine Truth never return empty handed from this shrine.

The death anniversary (urs) of Sultan Bahoo is celebrated every year on first Thursday of Jumada ath-thani. People come from far off places to join the celebrations.
